Handbags are selling for a record high in sales after Saint Laurent’s sale of its iconic handbags to a British luxury retailer.
Key points:St Laurent has sold its iconic St Louis handbags for £7.2m to B&C Handbags for more than 25 yearsThe sale comes after St Laurent sold a number of St Louis-branded handbags back in 2016 to French company B&am Handbags and its then owner, American fashion brand New Balance, for £2.3mThe sale, which takes place on Thursday, marks the first time a British brand has sold handbags from St Louis in nearly 40 years.
“The sale is a great testament to the enduring appeal of St Laurent, its iconic collection and the extraordinary breadth of brands and styles that have been embraced across the globe,” said Louis Vuitton’s managing director of merchandising, John Hoberman, in a statement.
“With a new, iconic collection of handbags that reflects its brand’s unique identity and a new owner, we are delighted to offer these iconic and iconic brands a new home and are committed to delivering an even better experience for our loyal customers.”
The handbags were designed by Louis Vuitch, a former director of design at Louis Vuicerci, who is the grandson of the late designer Paul Hirschfeld, whose creations were also created by the designer.
The sales come after St Louis sold a large number of its handbags in 2016 back to the British brand for more money, including its iconic black leather St Louis Classic collection.
St Laurent also sold a few of its own handbags.
The company said the handbags sold during the sale “will be presented in an exceptional state and will be in the highest condition to make them a pleasure to wear”.
The sale will go ahead as planned, said St Louis.
St Laurent’s Saint Louis collection is a mix of the designer’s iconic collection, which also includes a number that are sold in the US, as well as a number produced by other brands.
The company also has a number in the UK, including a pair of the St Louis Collection handbags made by Louis Nogueira, and a number from the British designer John Lebron.
The St Louis collection has been the subject of intense speculation over the years, with rumours circulating that the brand would sell a number to luxury goods retailer New Balance.
A spokeswoman for New Balance declined to comment.
In recent years, the St. Louis brand has had a tumultuous relationship with British retailers.
In 2016, the British fashion retailer was forced to pull out of a deal to sell its St Louis products, following complaints that the St, Louis brand was selling handbags with similar styles to the American brand.
As a result, a number had to be replaced.
Last year, New Balance pulled out of its partnership with the St Laurent brand, and in 2017, a St Louis boutique chain called Tuckers was shut down in the United Kingdom over alleged breaches of consumer protection laws.
